Opening the windows is one of the first things many of us do when warmer weather arrives. But after winter, the glass may be the least dirty part.

Dust, dead insects and grime can collect inside window tracks, while flyscreens trap pollen and outdoor debris. Moisture and condensation can also leave mould around window frames and sills.

Here’s how to clean every part of your windows, not just the glass.

What You’ll Need

- A vacuum with a narrow attachment
- A bucket of warm water
- Glass specific cleaning cloths or our Carbon Cloth
- A soft brush
- Window Groove Cleaning Brush or Crevice Cleaning Brush
- Mould Removal Wipes
- Glass Restoration Stain Remover, if you have mineral stains
- Glass cleaner, window cleaning bucket, microfibre frame & squeegee, and an extendable handle, if needed

Check each window first, then choose the products and tools needed for the job.

Step 1: Remove Loose Dirt First

Open the window and vacuum the tracks, corners and sills using a narrow attachment. Move the window as you work so you can reach both sides of the track.

Remove as much dry debris as possible before adding water. Otherwise, loose dust and dirt can quickly turn into muddy residue.

Quick tip: Clean the tracks before the glass so dirt isn’t transferred onto your freshly cleaned windows.

Step 2: Clean the Flyscreens

If the flyscreen is removable, place it on a clean, flat surface. Gently vacuum or brush away loose debris, then wash it with warm water and a soft cloth or brush.

Rinse the screen and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling it.

For fixed flyscreens, vacuum both sides where accessible before gently wiping the mesh from top to bottom with a damp cloth.

Quick tip: Place a towel beneath fixed flyscreens to catch water and loosened dirt.

Step 3: Clean the Window Tracks

Lightly dampen the tracks with warm water or a suitable surface cleaner. Use a Crevice Cleaning Brush to loosen grime from the grooves, corners and edges.

Wipe away the dirt with a cleaning cloth and repeat if necessary. Avoid flooding the tracks, and dry them thoroughly once clean.

For heavily soiled tracks, work in small sections and rinse your brush or cloth regularly.

Step 4: Check the Frames and Sills for Mould

Condensation can allow mould to develop around window frames, seals, corners and sills. Check behind blinds and curtains too, particularly in areas that regularly feel damp.

If mould keeps returning, check for ongoing condensation, poor ventilation or leaks that may be contributing to the moisture.

Step 5: Remove Water Spots and Mineral Stains From the Glass

Everyday dust, fingerprints and light marks can often be cleaned with a glass cleaner and cloth cloths.

Cloudy patches, chalky marks and stubborn water spots may be mineral deposits that ordinary window cleaner cannot remove. Use our Glass Restoration Stain Remover Diamond Edition with the included Special Glass Scourer.

Pay particular attention to exterior windows exposed to sprinklers, leaking gutters, coastal conditions or mineral-rich water.

Step 6: Clean and Dry the Glass

For a final clean, wipe the glass from top to bottom with a slightly damp Carbon Cloth, then use its Carbon Weave side to dry and polish. Alternatively, use glass cleaner and a Silicone Squeegee, wiping the blade between passes.

Avoid cleaning hot glass in direct sunlight, as water or cleaning solution may dry too quickly and leave streaks.

Quick tip: Clean the inside of the glass in one direction and the outside in another. If you spot a streak, you’ll know which side it’s on.
